Interesting. Hasn't heard the finished album?  And he thought the band were 'charming' live??? lol

He also said he liked The Snake.  Maybe he didn't want to make personal comments... Still good interview

Re: Exclusive HL interviews

This months interview goes back to the Crash era. Not the most informative interview as a new record in short answers is set, but there's still a few bits and pieces of interest.

Re: Exclusive HL interviews

It's one of those interviews where it seems he doesn't have much to say.  I always thought that INYL was a contractual obligation for J&L producing the album.  I had a similar experience... The Crash tour was cancelled in New Orleans early 1987, which I had tickets too!

Re: Exclusive HL interviews

Hmmmm

He comes across as a right knobhead!

What I do find interesting is that he stated 'the band' wanted INYL released. Phil has always stated that they were forced into INYL and that they wanted Love On The Run released. Someone is telling lies...

I managed to get to 3 gigs on the Crash tour Liverpool (my first ever League gig), Dublin & Tralee. Tralee was the most memorable for all the wrongs reasons as my dad drove me down and while we were there he had a heart attack. Those were the days! wink

Re: Exclusive HL interviews

Can we kill the myth than grunge scuppered Romantic? Romantic? came out in September 1990, Nevermind, arguably the album that broke grunge, came out a whole 12 months later.

Re: Exclusive HL interviews

I agree.   I don't think Virgin promoted it well.  Even though HLAW sound was better than most of Crash.  I believe the subject matter at that time, went over most people's heads.

Re: Exclusive HL interviews

I don't actually remember Romantic being promoted at all, rather like Secrets.

EastWest did a very good job with Octopus: Top of the Pops, Radio One and I remember that some of the BBC DJs played the singles, especially the remix edits at night.  Obviously the quality of the music and production also played a big part.

Lets hope Wall of Sound do a good job for the forthcoming singles and album.  We can only hope that the songs are good enough to register with the record buying public.

Is this piece in the wrong thread?

OK Ian so what did scupper Romantic, was it poor production, I've always thought that Kiss The Future sounded a bit odd?

Can I open a can of worms?

IMO... Part of it was timing and part of it was direction.  Half of Romantic was avant garde (HLAW, Rebound, TSAGO); the other half pop (MAD, GIRTT, LGTA).  Their sound was back compared to Crash, but different producers didn't make the production solid.  HLAW (interesting song & production) theme went over a lot of peoples head at the time.  It wasn't revealed until later that it was about the Gulf War.  The song had verses that related to war.  But how did it relate to a Heart Like A Wheel?  Confusing. The songs that were hits at that time, were more disco, bouncy, pop songs (Paula Abdul, Rick Astley, Snap, Milli Vanilli, etc .). Maybe they should have released Get It Right This Time or Lets Get Together Again...

Re: Exclusive HL interviews

I thought they got it right with "Heart Like A Wheel" - I am one of those HL fans that isn't an obsessive, so over the years I've dipped in and out of fandom and generally maintained an interest, buying singles or albums when I am aware of them. I was aware of HLAW at a time when I wasn't following electronic music so much (I was into the Stone Roses/Happy Mondays etc). But HLAW did get airplay and they did some TV as I remember hearing/seeing it even though I wasn't looking for it. I think the problem was that there was a shift in music between '87 and '90 - pop music generally became more guitar orientated while dance music became even more electronic. Kylie and Jason etc al had moved on from SAW so there wasn't so much electronic pop about (it had become pretty naff in fact). So-called Indie music was becoming manstream, leading to Grunge. REM were huge for example. So THL were not going to get as much airplay as they didn't fit very well with Dance or Indie. 1990 was when Pet Shop Boys started to struggle but they cannily started to bring in people like Johnny Marr and Bernard Sumner so managed to get some positive press. Then they sensibly disappeared for a couple of years and hit another peak in '93/'94.

By the time of Octopus, the bubble had burst on guitar pop to a certain extent, and THL also managed to get some credible remixers involved, the came out with a stunning music video during the last couple of years when those things were important - the group looked great compared to the Romantic? era - confident, slick, determined. Finally, their core audience was probably ready to start buying and collecting again - most of the people my age had a really rough few student years in the very early 90s but were relatively solvent again by the mid-90s.

Personally, I think Octopus was also a stronger album than Romantic? but a few tracks on the latter are as good as anything they've ever done (HLAW especially).

Re: Exclusive HL interviews

Also I'm not bashing HLAW, I actually like the song.  But the conversation was why the Romantic period wasn't successful as other times in their career.  I don't feel HLAW has great commercial, mainstream appeal.  Just like The Lebanon, good song -but do politics sell?  I feel they weren't the songs to start promoting successfully an album.

Re: Exclusive HL interviews

I can't stand Heart Like A Wheel. It's just a naff song with naff lyrics. Romantic? had really poor production. It could have been so much better with the right producers - or just 1 producer. I even think S/A/W would have done a great job with it. Certain tracks still get plenty of plays from me (MAD, Rebound, Stars & Get It Right) but it's not an album that I would sit and listen to from beginning to end. I played it in the car last week and Mister Moon came on and the other half (who's sick to death of me playing The League) asked was it a new song. That's how often I play certain songs from it. smile

Re: Exclusive HL interviews

I hardly ever listen to a full THL album all the way through anymore. I do however often do my own little MP3 compilations to throw in the car - you know; some of the unreleased stuff etc. wink

Re: Exclusive HL interviews

Don't let him fool ya - he's got a promo of the new album.....

I think Romantic was basically average as an album, same as Crash.  I didn't really like the style of Crash but some of the songs are good and I didn't really like the songs on Romantic but the style was getting back on track.  Octopus is only cringeworthy in a few places but you can definitely tell it's a more together album and deserved to do better although it did have a good singles run.  Here's hoping for the next album whoever is producing it - Eye Monster, Richard X or even Philip.  I reckon all three.
