Motorsport 2010 - (Formula One)
I'd like to get the wheel turning this year with this...
Last season there was an unlikely fairytale outcome with Jenson Button and the fledgling Brawn GP team upsetting the established formbook and grabbing both titles in the penultimate race in Brazil. It was an outstanding performance from the Red Bull Renault team whom were definitely the strongest challengers in the second half of the year. 2009 was a year that surprisingly established frontrunners McLaren and Ferrari floundered and there was unexpected joy for perennial back markers Force India with points and an astonishing podium finish in Belgium.
But what of 2010 and how can the new season attempt to compare with last year?
Well ladies and gentlemen, with just over a month to go before we reconvene the potential for a great new season looks good with many changes on the driver line-up, four new teams on the grid and new technical regulations (including in race refuelling banned (although tyre change pit stops will continue) and a new points system (for the ten finishers from the winner getting 25 down to 1 for tenth place), although attempting to pick a potential title winning driver and team is harder than ever! Looking through the nineteen race calendar you’ll see the welcome return of Canada plus a new race in Korea on 24th October leading up to the season finale, once again held in Abu Dhabi on the 14th November.
As winter testing gets underway this week lets take a moment to stroll along the pit lane see how this challengers are prepared for the coming season…
With an all British line-up of consecutive World Champions, McLaren offer us an intriguing prospect. Although most people will expect that once again Lewis Hamilton will, for the fourth year running, dominate his team-mate the technical regulation changes this year (where drivers will have to preserve their tyres) may benefit the smooth driving style of Jenson Button. Development of last years car which was for the most part the slowest on track was largely suspended fairly early on so with extended time concentrated on the 2010 challenger much is hoped for from the new MP4-25.
Naturally grabbing all the headlines we have the astonishing return of Michael Schumacher whom in the Mercedes Benz team (re-branded from last years title winning Brawn) has the potential to resume his career in typical dominant form. I’m not a great fan of the multiple World Champion and I personally feel sorry for teammate Nico Rosberg whom having been the class act at the inferior Williams last year finds himself immediately in the shadow of his illustrious fellow countryman.
So if it’s not a German driver or a German powered engine that grabs both titles then who else is a contender in 2010? Well step this way over to Ferrari whom coming from a fairly disappointing season this year field a rejuvenated Felipe Massa and the consummate highly regarded Fernando Alonso, the Spaniard whom no doubt is keen to revive his career after two fairly lacklustre seasons with inferior Renaults. Although both are naturally full of praise for the new car the team are already preparing a B-spec version for rapid use which hardly inspires too much confidence!
In 2009 Red Bull Renault set the standard very high with exceptional drives by young German Sebastian Vettel and veteran Australian Mark Webber (my most improved driver of last year) and much is expected from the team in this new season. Being the only team with established driver and staff continuity they might have a distinct advantage over their rivals.
Amongst the other teams the works Renault outfit will be out to restore their tarnished image after 2009’s ‘Singapore crashgate’ scandal and it will be interesting, should the new car prove suitably impressive, to see if ex-BMW-Sauber driver Robert Kubica can regain his impressive 2008 form. There is further interest in the team thanks to the debut of Vitaly Petrov, the first Russian to compete in Formula One!
I know there are three teams using Mercedes Benz power but although Force India certainly proved themselves in the latter stages of 2009 I remain unconvinced about drivers (Adrian) Sutil and (Vitantonio) Liuzzi. Looking through the complete entry list you’ll notice that with the loss of BMW and Toyota the engines being used is down to just Mercedes Benz, Ferrari, Renault and new returnee Cosworth Ford whom is being used by the Williams team and the four newcomers. Having the Lotus name back in F1 seems great although I doubt seasoned pilots (Jarno) Trulli and (Heikki) Kovalainen are hardly going to set the world alight. Interesting to see the name Bruno Senna in the new Campos Meta team and it’s good to see (Kamui) Kobayashi (whom impressed in the last two 2009 races) gaining a berth at the Sauber team alongside former long term McLaren test driver (Pedro) de la Rosa although I think that switching from BMW to customer Ferrari power they are unlikely to make too many regular incursions into the points.
In the meantime the countdown to the new season beginning in the newly extended racetrack in Bahrain on 14th March has now begun, prepare for battle to recommence!

Anyone like Boiled Being got any thoughts about Formula One in 2010???

I don't like that new points system. It'll only make the usual contenders more difficult to match. I also hope Schumacher fails spectacularly.

Yeah but with a seven point gap between first and second there is more incentive to go for the win.

It may sound like a good idea but it might also encourage the likes of Schumacker it run people off the track!

Well we've had the first Gran Prix, congratulations to Alonso and Red Bull. What are McLaren and Mercedes up to? Unless they have turned the power down to preserve their engines. We'll see after the next few races.
Can't wait for Melbourne!

I agree with what you say but it was... very boring! Where was all the overtaking we were hoping for from the banning of pit stop refueling. A thought that has been echoed by motor racing journalists like the article in today's The Times newspaper

I'm in Melbourne that Thursday and Friday before the race. I'll probably hear the practice sessions.

There's a lot of comment in the motor sport press about the boring Bahrain race and that something need to be done pronto. Two mandatory tyre stops is the most popular thought.

Hamilton believes that McLaren can match Ferrari if they can do better in qualifing. Button's best hope for Melbourne may be that it rains.

Funny you said that because look what it did for Jenson! I really thought he had blown it when he made the early pit stop for tyres but it proved to be a master stroke.
Bottom line is the Australian GP was brilliant, exciting entertainment with lots of overtaking and incident throughout the field. This is more the kind of racing we want to see!!!
My driver of the day has however got to be Robert Kubica whose works Renault hasn't shown much promise in winter testing. It was marvellous the way he somehow managed to hold off the charging Lewis Hamilton behind him to gain a richly deserved second place.

Well we've had Melbourne and Sepang, looks like we'll have an exciting season with any one of eight drivers capable of winning the drivers championship.

Re: Motorsport 2010 - (Formula One)
Well wasn't that bizzare in Friday's free practice... don't know if you saw it but one of the Torro Rosso cars was going down a straight in China and both front tyres suddenly popped off. Although rather funny it could have been serious as the wire tethers that are supposed to keep wheels attached to the car in such an incident failed thereby endangering spectators, not that their were many around, it's hardly the well attended of races on the current calendar.

The tethers didn't actually fail . . the struts they were secured to disintegrated as well. Explosive! Here's to a strong race for the Mac Lads

Isn't it great the way Rosberg keeps out qualifing and out racing Schumacher. Mercedes must be wishing they'd gone for Sutil or Glock.

I agree I certainly didn't see that result coming. Great stuff to see the British boys triumph and again Jenson getting the better of Lewis, how long can this last I wonder?

Re: Motorsport 2010 - (Formula One)
Just been looking at the inital shots from Spanish GP Friday free practice (dominated by the McLarens, Red Bull and Schumacher's Mercedes) and was surprised to see that Sauber have a new sponsor. Looking at one of their cars up on the jacks in the garage is a 'Burger King' logo... do you get fries with that???

Re: Motorsport 2010 - (Formula One)
Really Red Bull Renault should have won the Turkish GP and continued their seemingly devastating form which almost gives the feeling that they are about to run away with the championship. Totally unbelievable when Vettel crashed in to Webber.
However I was obviously pleased to see the Brits win with a McLaren one-two showing how best to battle with your teammate, personally I thought it was a shame that Jenson didn't win that but then they were under a 'save fuel' order from the team.
Great shame about Russian Petrov whose Renault car was clobbered by Alonso in the closing stages, he deserved better than a distant 12th.

Re: Motorsport 2010 - (Formula One)
Yes indeed really enjoyed what little I saw of the Canadian GP, distracted by other things at the time.
Good result for our British drivers even if IMO they got the positions round the wrong way Schumacher up to his old dirty tricks with Kubica and Massa falling foul of probably his worst performance of the year, but of course no action will ever be taken against (arguably) F1's greatest viewer attraction
Happy for Alonso to grab third place and enjoyed he and Lewis battling for position coming out of the pits during the race.

Just deserts for Massa, after he took about 4 swipes at Liuzzi at the start finally spinning him - and also nerfed Jenson's rear, although this wasn't mentioned in the commentary. I agrees Shoemaker had a shocker!

Ah yes now you come to mention it the start of the race swipes at Liuzzi were unexpected to say the least but I missed his 'nerfing' Jenson's rear. No wonder Rob Smedley (Massa's race engineer) was so evasive in the post race 'BBC red button forum' program (about an hour and a half of worth chat and discussion with drivers, team personnel and BBC pundits... very interesting and enjoyable!).
Only got to see the highlights shortly after the end of the race before the BBC pulled all Forumla One offerings from the red button service to make way for all this bloody football rubbish... not my kind of thing

Well Valencia not such a bore this year!
10 drivers including Jenson have been given a 5 second penalty for speeding under the safety car - does not affect his podium as Rubens was 20s behind.
Good/lucky result for Jenson Even luckier Webber walking away from that take-off!
I was somewhat amused/bemused by Alonso concentrating more on trying to get Lewis a big penalty than driving the car Looks like he's really fitting in at the wingeing Ferrari team. Loved it when Kobayashi got him at the end

Yep I agree with you on all that, marvellous job by Kobayashi taking both Alonso and Buemi at the end of the race even though the penalties affected the eventual result.
So Red Bull really did give Webber wings for this race... what a very lucky boy from an awesome crash, incar shots were amazing but he was never going to cleanly pass the Lotus the way he went about it.
Hope we have a good race at Silverstone at the British GP next time!

Re: Motorsport 2010 - (Formula One)
No chance of a British driver at Silverstone thanks to a certain dogged Australian driver, but good performance from Hamilton to keep him honest throughout.
Good recoveries from Vettel (that first lap collision with Webber cost him dear) and Button (a terrible qualifying down in 14th to come within sight of a podium in fourth).
Alonso chancing his arm against Kubica gaining a drive through penalty... a bit harsh??? Possibly but neither Ferrari were I think really going to make serious inroads into the major points paying positions.
Another fantastic drive from Kobayashi in the Sauber and some worthy pleasing mid field battles sometimes three abreast. No respect given to Schumacher with Vettel and then Suttil muscling their way the 7 times champ... bit of a sad German case nowerdays(?), particularly with teammate Nico Rosberg gaining another podium.
Pleasantly suprised to see a good showing for Williams with Hulkenberg holding onto a single point 10th place whilst Barrichello netting fifth. Not that most people will have noticed but the veteran Brazilian later cropped up as the 'F1 star in a reasonably priced car' in BBC2's "Top Gear"... and went fastest of all there!
IMO the revisions to the Silverstone circuit are a great success, it was a very satisfying race however in the title race, for the third time Hamilton extends his lead in the drivers championship. On this kind of form it seems difficult to see him being caught, doesn't bode well for the rest of the season if he continues to dominate and stroll to the title. I hope other contenders will be able to close the gap soon!
