Re: Remember The Eighties Newsletter

Got my copy of 'Diamond - Special Edition' this morning with disc one being about 71 mins and disc two being about 65 mins.  Standard gatefold digipack packaging with booklet (all single release covers feature in this).

I can understand why it was cheaper than the Duran Duran Special Editions, they are, on the evidence of 'Rio' certainly leading the field in providing the buyer a quality product.

Still am not unhappy these Spandau releases are certainly well worth having!!!

Re: Remember The Eighties Newsletter

Yep 'Diamond' is definitely the better of the two.  I recieved 'Journeys To Glory' yesterday and with disc one weighing in at 48 mins and disc two a paltry 43 1/2 mins this is the one that is noticably slimmer than 'Diamond'. hmm

Having said that I'm sure this is the best 'Journeys To Glory' release we are likely to see so must not entirely grumble.  Still surely it could have had far more content.

Big thumbs up to the BBC Session (JTG disc two) and In Concert (D disc two) items which are IMO certainly worth listening to! smile

Re: Remember The Eighties Newsletter

what is frustrating is that while the packaging and tracklists are quite great..the remastering is usually quite poor, with the sound being way too loud and dynamics lost. I heard the recent Rio remaster sounds quite tinny and poor.

and the BBC concerts are great but why are the DD ones digital download only. Lossy file formats are generally looked down upon in the live trading community.

This sounds quite interesting, particularly the possibility of a new 'Greatest Hits' package, something that I think needed to be updated since the previous release.

Re: Remember The Eighties Newsletter

Just one last thing I'd like to say about the 'Duran Duran'/'Seven and The Ragged Tiger' CD/DVD releases is that I had a go at writing reviews for these products and here is what I came up with, which have been submitted to the HMV and Play.com websites...

DURAN DURAN – DURAN DURAN ‘SPECIAL EDITION (CD/DVD)
When New Romantics were cool
Slipping below the iconic minimalist white covered album design inspired rigid box this title contains three individually sleeved discs, five stiff postcard separate band member prints, a eight page booklet (with two pages offering full contents details) and a six times CD sized full colour portrait orientated group shot.  CD ONE (54 mins) offers the original album (with original play order (i.e. with TO THE SHORE as track 4)) plus 4 B Side tracks the best of which is undoubtedly the sassy purposeful LATE BAR.  CD TWO (70.75 mins) is an audio delight blending live demos with four extended remixes (all topping out at over 6 mins) the best of which for me has got to be the Night Version of PLANET EARTH.  1981 was the year when make up hairspray frilly shirts and pixie boots were prevalent and successfully leading the New Romantic movement the style of Duran Duran clearly shows through during the DVD which is a pleasing blend of promos and BBC live performances.  Although its always good to see anything from Old Grey Whistle Test my personal favourite has got to be the Multi-Coloured Swap Shop numbers and in particular FRIENDS OF MINE, something I feel really captures both the mood and style of the song and the general unique feel of the album.  Sadly due to the inclusion of the rather saucy Long Censored Version of the GIRLS ON FILM promo raising the certificate to an 18 most young fans will be unable to enjoy this hour long DVD but for those of us of a certain age the entire overall contents are a marvellous piece of audio visual nostalgia.  As someone who bought the album on vinyl back on its original release this new reissue is a stunning, fully comprehensive painstakingly remastered classic that is impeccably faultless in its delivery.  Once again Duran Duran have raised the bar of quality for these extended reissues and in my opinion they will certain be hard to match.  Both from a music and design perspective an essential and highly collectable purchase!

DURAN DURAN – SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER ‘SPECIAL EDITION (CD/DVD)
Supremely confidant gains worthy polish
Following the spirit of the colourful 1983 third album cover you’ll find inside the dark blue rigid box this title contains three individually sleeved discs, five stiff postcard full frame band member prints, a eight page booklet (with pages 3, 5, 7 offering full contents details) and a six times CD sized full colour landscape orientated group shot.  CD ONE (dark cream sleeve) sadly only features the bog standard original album which with the absence of addition tracks still fails to reach 38 mins in length.  CD TWO (in a dark red sleeve) is more satisfying affair and on this 66 min disc you will find non album tracks (a favourite for me would be the Ian Little Remix of TIGER TIGER), live performances and four 6 min plus extended remixes all of which for me are very pleasing.  Another swish visual treat from the fashion conscious band awaits you on the (dark blue sleeve) DVD disc which over its 101 mins is a pleasing mix of the mini live gig film ALL THE LIGHTS GO DOWN, five promos (including a 16 min movie version of NEW MOON ON MONDAY) and a couple of TOTP BBC appearances.  For an album that further consolidated their success from its direct era defining RIO predecessor this third album is suitably honoured with this stunning, fully comprehensive painstakingly remastered classic.  This is yet another example of the superior quality of product Duran Duran have established with these reissues and on the evidence here it is a standard that will definitely be hard to match!  As a further impeccably realised highly appealing stylish product that will be a worthy addition to any serious pop music fans collection making it an essential highly cherished purchase!

Good old Bronski Beat. Played the Age Of Consent on vinyl just last week. Where indeed are they now - apart from Jimmy.

Thanks for that Pauline... certainly good news! big_smile

For me I think that 'Parade' is probably their best album so I'm looking forward to this overdue 'Special Edition'.

Re: Remember The Eighties Newsletter

Got my copy of the two disc 'Special Edition' of Spandau Ballet - Parade today and you certainly get a fine amount of content for this release.

Disc One - 13 tracks with total running time of 69:40
(standard 8 track album plus five bonus tracks)

Disc Two - 15 tracks with total running time of 79:00
(this one contains a worthy Wembley Arena 5/12/84 Radio On in concert... thanks BBC for offering this up, nice atmosphere and intros to band members featured)

Same cardboard three panel design as was on offer for 'Journeys...' and 'Diamond', nice to see the cover artwork for the four single releases even though they are a bit arty Van Gogh type illustrations, not my kind of thing.

a six panel found out booklet which has the familiar 'band ready for action' (i.e. four looking right and Tony fist raised looking left) image on two panels.

For me the content is the best thing about this title, packaging is adequate, nice to have a clearer, brighter cover of the megaphone man leading the crowd of brightly dressed variety of characters behind him in front of stadium.
