Re: General Recommendations (not worth a whole thread)

A couple of good music cassette finds for me from the Oxfam bookshop recently…

Apparently one of Gary Numan’s favourites The Mission with their 1988 13 track album ‘Children’ featuring “Tower of Strength”, probably the song for which they are best known.  They certainly have a distinctive, hypnotically engrossing sound with a unique aural soundscape perfectly complementing the emotively powerful mystical lyrics.  For me a great listening experience!

Is it cool nowadays to say that you like the music of Rod Stewart?  Personally I generally don’t mind his dulcet distinctive vocal tones and my second find is a 16 track 1989 ‘Best of’ collection which includes familiar restful ballads ‘Maggie May’ and ‘Sailing’.  Yeah it’s got ‘Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?’, the song where for most people he lost all possible credibility however I think it still sounds like a good up tempo track that you can certainly dance to although how many of would perform it at a karaoke bar, at least without alcoholic inducement!  In my opinion, possibly the best track on the tape is ‘Baby Jane’, primarily for the great saxophone solo but also for the natural self assured lyrical and instrumental flow of the song.  For me Rod’s best known song ‘Young Turks’ also features and you got to admire the energetic verve and pace of delivery he sings the lyrics, something that reminds me of the seemingly tireless leaping around he does in the video.

I wouldn't be a fan of Muse but I really like 'Uprising' although it does sound like Call Me by Blondie in parts.

Afront, for super weirdness try Mungolian Jet Set's new album (review and samples on Resident Advisor). Vitalic's new album is also pretty good.

"Songs Remind Me Of You", a brilliant Richard X produced track from Annie's new album "Don't Stop":

Poor old Morrissey collapsed on stage last night after just one song and was taken to hospital: http://www.nme.com/news/morrissey/48028

Seems the poor bloke seems to stress himself out too much. What was it Sparks sang last year? Oh yep:

Lighten up, Morrissey.

Excellent recs there Steven, thanks! Really like that Mungolian Jet Set. Vitalic a bit hit-and-miss but only listened once.

The new Assemblage 23 album "Compass" is excellent: possibly his best ever.

Re: General Recommendations (not worth a whole thread)

WTF!! How bad was that? ....and Howard Jones didn't really deserve to be onstage with the others. Awful miming with Thomas Dolby pretending to trigger samples on a TB303 bassline....ewww

They blatantly got paid a load of cash to do it....

This was one of LBs support acts. Really liked the songs 'Under the Sheets' and 'Starry Eyed' that she played at the gig.

Re: General Recommendations (not worth a whole thread)

Some of those tracks have been knocking around for several years. Siobhan released them as singles under her own name. Bitter Pill and Pulsatron are brilliant tracks IMO, although I think the Hugo Nicholson mix of the latter is the bestsest version smile

Yeah I was surprised too. Pusatron is something like 6 years old at this stage but it's still great to have them together on 1 album.

Re: General Recommendations (not worth a whole thread)

Found a couple of audio cassettes last week at the Oxfam bookshop.

'Headlines and Deadlines - the hits of A-ha' - pretty good collection although they've done quite a lot since 1991, maybe it's time for a new CD/DVD release??

The other one was 'The Best of New Order', looks like there are few good, familiar tracks amongst the 16 on offer

Devo = totally fun this week.  They're doing a 2 album/2 night US tour.  I went to the "Freedom of Choice" night, took this picture...
