Credo - PRESS REVIEWS

Thread title edited by JJ

With Credo due to be released in the very near future the reviews should start coming out fairly soon and indeed the first 'official' one is here. Unfortunately Mojo Magazine don't think much of the album awarding it only 2 stars out of 5. I didn't buy said rag but took two pictures on my phone of the review which came out pretty poor. Basically finished saying they need to get Martin Rushent back in for the next album.

*edit*

No idea why they came out that big so I've deleted them. I'll type it out for ya.

The Human League Credo
**
Get around town for the Sheffield synth-sybarites' 10th album.

It's been nine years since The Human League's previous LP, and in the interim they've shared queasy '80s nostalgia fest stages with Kim Wilde, Level 42 and A Flock Of Seagulls. Will their return to recording prove their relevance, three decades after 1981's epochal, synapse-sparkling Dare!? The hi-gloss but uneven Credo only partially convinces.
Unhappily, autotuned opener Never Let Me Go could scare off the non-League faithful all by itself, while Single Minded has a none-more-stern Phil Oakey apparently advocating the Swinging Lifestyle - the effect is pure Alan Partridge. Elsewhere, however, daffy Downtown esque raving single Night People and dramatic death vignettes Privilege and Sky demonstrate the potency of the group's populist eccentricity, and it's hard to baulk when the rocking Get Together calls for unity. There remains the suspicion, though, that a call to Dare! producer Martin Rushent could be an idea next time.

Ian Harrison.

Re: Credo - PRESS REVIEWS

Some journo's know how to write wordy 'look at me I'm clever with words' reviews.  Maybe the album is a mixed bag but when you spend one third of the review not reviewing the album .....  And also a hark back to Dare and 80s nostalgia tours tend to suggest that the reviewer has an idea of where they should be and a disregard for anything else they have done between (and I don't count Crash or Romantic because they were shit) so judges the album on that.

Do reviewers actually listen to albums more than once?  Or even all the way through?  I'm not expecting miracles from this album (hoping for better lyrics than Night People though!) but I don't think it's pitched at readers of Mojo.  Mojo started off as a good read but has had to dumb itself down over the years to keep/get new readers.  If the album gets reasonable reviews in the popular press and dance mags then I think it's job well done.

Re: Credo - PRESS REVIEWS

It's a mag that is generally a refuge for middle-aged rockist* types so I wouldn't expect a favourable review from one of their journos, who probably knows very little about electro/synth. He probably creeps around like a mouse at home with his designer chocolates and cheeses, never knowingly clubbing it. So what would he know?

Re: Credo - PRESS REVIEWS

Its the same rubbish that the media slate other bands with, they are all a load of John Peel wannabe's and they ain't.

Guns n Roses were given hell for their O2 appearance on Oct 13th, the same old, came on Late, 40minutes after the support act..... No. of clothing changes/solo's - the guy was on stage for 2 1/2 hours..... The hired guns -yawn and so on.....

Yet all the fans I saw at the show were blown away by the energy of the show.  The media are just not fans, they don't care what they write nor do they deal with the fallout of what their mutterings influence, namely those that believe everything that they read in the newspaper.

As pauline says "Judge for yourselves...."

Re: Credo - PRESS REVIEWS

After the initial auto-tunage shock I'm beginning to REALLY like this song - especially from about halfway through when it all kicks off.

Re: Credo - PRESS REVIEWS

I keep playing it over and over! Love it! I have faith in the album.  Has all the right electronic sounds that Crash was eloquently missing.  It has enough funky swang (or should I say swag?) but at the same time sounding unmistakably Human League!  Excellent job folks!!!!  big_smile big_smile big_smile big_smile

Re: Credo - PRESS REVIEWS

A polite request - we have a thread for our/fan reviews of Credo here, which I think would be better kept separate from the press reviews (hence I've renamed this thread.) Would you please keep your own comments, excitements etc in that thread and just post/comment on the press reviews here.

Thanks! smile

Re: Credo - PRESS REVIEWS

The Mojo reviewer clearly doesn't know what he's talking about, did he actually listen to the album?

The Electricity Club review is much more positive, they seem to be fans, and I really liked Never Let Me Go.  Oh dear I'm in danger of going off topic.  Perhaps we shouldn't have so many threads about Credo?

Never Let Me Go has been taken down, obviously electricity-club made a mistake in puting it on in the first place.  You'll just have to wait, I heard it once and want to hear it again soonest.  Only 71 days to go.
