Old / dead threads

Postby JJ » Thu May 24, 2007 12:31 pm

In an attempt to preserve space, threads that have obviously died a death will be purged on a regular basis after some time.

Old threads that are considered worth keeping, even if no replies have been added for some time, will be kept in this area.

Using what rationale?

It's unfortunate that you will need to delete threads. Is the space problem due to hosting costs?

I'm not sure of the reason, Afront, I was simply passing that message on from Matt.

As for as rationale goes, the fewer deletions the better imo. I certainly don't want to lose threads that have information in them, for example. I think it'd just be for something that is, say, relevant only to that particular time it was posted. For example, take TCB's leaving do last night - if there are only 1 or 2 posts a) advertising it, and b) saying "Yes, I might go" then that would not really have much relevance to anything a year (or whatever period Matt decides) down the line.

Surely that must be the only reason for purging old threads.

It's a terrible shame that some will have to go - is there any way around this?

As I wrote above, Danny, Matt will have to answer that one I'm afraid.

I don't want to labour the fact that I'm continually ignored (;)) but did we ever determine the answer to this?

On the basis that no threads have been deleted yet, other than those containing spam, it hasn't really become an issue yet.

My point about Matt being the only one that can answer re. the space issue is unchanged.

Please take caution in deleting threads. I agree with others who don't want threads deleted that have info. in them. I sometimes like to go back to those, either for myself or to pass along to others. Those who do a lot of -spam link removed by moderator - find help and solidarity from many of the posts. It can be quite taxing dealing with the stresses of new people and new places. Humans can be so.... human!

A slightly bizarre bump to this thread, Carol, seeing as the previous post was over 4 years ago! :)

The only things that have been deleted are duplicates and spam. Bearing in mind the relatively low traffic I doubt it'll become an issue unless Matt knows otherwise.
